Audacity
I post this as a reminder to myself, and on the offchance that one person might find this tip useful, whenever that might be. I left my computer recording a soundfile, during which the battery ran out and made my laptop shut down rather than sleep. The resulting file was a headerless AIFC. It wouldn't open in a few programs I tried, so i googled for a solution. I downloaded Audacity, which I have tried before and didn't really like. However, it can open raw data and make a header for the file, assigning whatever values you give (bit rate and depth, file type etc.) I exported the file to WAV and so my recording was rescued. Audacity is free as well.
