SC Symposium and TodaysArt Festival

Last Thursday to Sunday I was in The Hague, checking out the SuperCollider Symposium and then spectating and finally performing at the TodaysArt Festival. There were many interesting presentations at the symposium, the ones that stick in my mind are IXI Quarks nifty composing and synthesis environment, Nick Collins' automatic synth-pop music generator, and a talk on dissonance curves. Thursdays electro-acoustic concert was a proper sit-down affair, with harpsichord, violin and flute performances all being put through the digital mangle in fine and spooky style. On friday evening, I had a wander around the TodaysArt event, which saw about 12 venues in the city hosting various gigs and events on the weekend. Pierre Bastien was playing in the Grote Kerk ("Great Church") and was entrancing as ever. I took him to see Kool Keith afterwards, but KK wasn't on stage unfortunately, it was someone else in a hood who was a bit boring to listen to. I didn't want to wait to see if he'd turn up, since I'd already seen him a few years ago (rapping about masturbation and throwing porn mags into the audience at the Parc de la Villette in Paris - most entertaining) but had never got the chance to hang out with Pierre before, so we went for a drink instead and had a good chat about music making methods and our touring experiences. Afterwards I went to lend an ear to Galaxy 2 Galaxy, the new Underground Resistance allied funk band. They were playing slap bass and excruciating saxophone solos over the top of Detroit classics such as Jupiter Jazz. It was even worse than my description, so I didn't stick around to witness the new incarnation of Model 500, featuring both Juan Atkins and Mad Mike, apparently. I heard it described as "nostalgic".
The next evening it was my turn to piss on my own legacy. After several short and stimulating sets from various SC posse members, I broke out a revised version of my live set with added sound tweaking elements. There were many unintentionally glitch-tastic moments as I struggled to control what was going on and pressed all the wrong buttons, but I managed to have fun by the end. It didn't feel like performing a piece of music though, more like attempting to complete a technical exercise a bit beyond my brain capacity. Still, a good dry run for the Japan trip next month.

FP Flac on its way

FLAC fans are in the minority, but they sure make their feelings known! I had some requests for a FLAC edition of "Formant Potaton" so I asked the bleep.com crew about it, and they said it's on the way within the next week or two.

Hi Yo, I've stopped selling Bounds Green CDs myself. Very limited numbers have been promised to a select few online stores, which will take care of most of the rest of the stock. If you ordered from me, thanks again. I make marginally more money that way, and you get your CD sooner and cheaper, so everyone's happy... I hope...

A thought becomes real

By popular request:

This is the proof copy of the Bounds Green CD. It looks pretty good. I hid part of the CD because I'm going to change the design a little bit.

The CD features all of the tracks that will be in the download version, plus a small bonus that will be unavailable anywhere else! It will be a numbered (very) limited edition, available for a reasonable £10 / €15 / US$20 including postage. Payment via PayPal. If you would like to pre-order your copy, send an email to cdsales@durftal.com with your name and address, and I'll send a payment request in good time. Official release date is 10 September, so these will be posted the week before, perhaps sooner if the response is good. Don't miss out! It will be no use crying over ebay in 6 months time...

P.S. You can find out more about this release here and here, and don't forget the whole album can also be previewed on Bleep:-

Spread over 2 Rooms at Ryde Theatre we're gona be changing around the layout of the venue and building our own stages, so the whole nights going to be alot more packed and intimate than usual. We've also got loads of new artwork from n8th and M1, alongside a massive lightshow with stobes, lazers, smoke and scanners...with live visuals in the main room by Ben Francis (tbc)

Plus there's plenty of glow sticks + inflatable rave toys in the post from America as i type.... and we're hiring in extra sound up to a chest boxing 16k - lets hope the theatre can stand it (-:

Cylob is a f!@*ing legend and its gona be amazing having him down to play on the island, his demo was picked up by Aphex Twin in 1993 and he's been releasing cuts on Rephlex, Breakin', Warp, Weme and Soul Jazz records since.

Corsica Studios, London

Luke Vibert
B12
Cylob
Ardisson
The Doubtful Guest

entry £10

I intend to rebel against the conformity of this event, and play an "I hate acid" set of heavy rock (WASP, Whitesnake, Def Leppard and Motley Crue.) That's what will happen, and there's NOTHING you or anyone else can do to stop me.

Why didn't I think of that?

Hearing your own song in a DJ mix can trigger a revelation, if the other track really sets it off then you think, why didn't I do that in the first place? Rob Hall has been putting monthly mixes online recently, the latest one blends one of my old Kinesthesia tracks with some old school hip-hop and it works nicely, enough so that I wouldn't mind seeking out a rapper and doing it properly!
