Hi, I've got a new blog and it has pretty much the same ingredients as this one, except under my real name rather than "Cylob". So I will stop posting here for the time being, and possibly forever. I don't want to make such a division between doing music stuff and visuals or coding any more. I've worked on a couple of arty projects recently, and would like to pursue that as much as anything else. The latest post there is about my performance tonight and tomorrow, which is not what you might expect - check it out!

At last this will shortly hit the information superbahn: a radio mix, the extended vocal mix and a nice long dub mix called "Maced In The Face." 20 minutes in total so you can truly overdose on that bassline.

I tried to make the artwork colours so that your eyes really hurt when you stare at it, and then it might kind of feel like being maced, although not quite as bad obviously. I placed the 6 by eye as I couldn't be bothered to measure it and it looked alright to me. Would any graphic designers care to chime in before I send it off?

Got To Dance

I got a tip-off about this today from a Mr. M.S. of North London (thanx): There's a dance talent competition on Sky One (UK) at the moment, and one of the groups, called "Beyond Repair" (!) used my track. I feel a bit spun out to watch it, since it's an X-Factor type production... you can see it here (beware they make you watch an advert before the clip.)

So, would you like to read some blah about this track? It's my "remix" of The Ampex Twins track "Vimto". I made it one early afternoon in 1994 when I was living in Bounds Green. I was in a really bad mood at the time, which coloured my perception somewhat, in fact I marked it on the DAT inlay as "shit track." When I was lucky enough to have the opportunity of having a remix out on the aforementioned release, I gave the choice of this track or the track called "Sixed" and this one was chosen, much to my surprise. I subsequently liked it more, once my memory of having made it, along with whatever mood I was in, faded. It seems to be held in high regard by mid-90's electronic music affectionados, and I won't argue with that... the strings buildup is totally nicked from Trans Europe Express and the tunes and beat are pretty simplistic, maybe that's the secret of its appeal.
I won't make any broadcast royalties from this, as it's technically written and produced by someone else, but that cuts both ways as I get the mechanicals from the remix of my track that appears on 27 Mixes For Cash, and that sold quite a lot!
I think remixes are generally a bad deal for the artist, as it means letting go of a piece of music forever in return for a flat fee. It's only good if there is a significant amount of money or recognition to be had, or both (see above.) But even when it does, it makes me sad. It's like selling a baby for adoption. You lose control of things like the way it is mastered. It's frustrating to sweat over a track and be really happy with the result, only to listen back to the finished copy and realise that they have simply put it through some kind of poor quality VST compression plugin that has mangled the transients and turned it into a gloopy mess, which has then been pressed as the second track on that side of the 12 inch, thereby reducing the quality even more.
Also, if you are a big name artist and have done enough remixes that could be put together as an album, you may find yourself in the position of having a shady music business operator quietly going around and licensing all of those tracks in order to make a "new" album "by" you on the sly, from which you will earn not a penny (thus forcing you and your record company to squash this attempt by licensing the tracks for an "official" version, for which your fans accuse you of being a rip-off merchant!) It's one of those things which is technically absolutely above board but morally stinks. Which is a pretty good description of the music business overall. The music business is like the porn business - it's not the people who are actually doing the f***ing who are making the money! And as this post threatens to turn into a rant, I will finish it here!

iPod SC & OSCemote Demo

There are a few Open Sound Control controllers available on the iPhone platform now, the way they are usually used is to join the same network as a computer and send messages there to perform (for instance) synthesis tasks. Now that SuperCollider itself is available on the iPhone / iPod Touch, even the synthesis can be achieved on the same machine. Usually it's impossible for the user to run two programs together, but there is a program called Backgrounder, available on Cydia for jailbroken devices, which lets you do this. The video demonstrates OSCemote and SuperCollider running simultaneously: everything you hear is coming from the iPod itself.

The code is pretty crude but it demonstrates the principle of using the OSCemote multi-touch screen and is available here:

Tiny Music System

You can now get SuperCollider on your iPhone / iPod Touch. I have an iPod and so last week iProdded RedFrik to install it for me, and now a new software project has begun, the Tiny Music System. So far there is just a drum synth / sequencer, demonstrated in this little video I just made.

The CPU load % of real time synthesis on this first generation device (running at 412 mhz) is about 10 times that of my laptop (2 ghz) which is about what you'd expect. It's a sort of miracle that it exists at all, and one I intend to exploit.

I've been a bit lazy about checking them out, but EDMX's podcast series is now up to number nine, although then again it's not so bad to have an extended session of the ones I haven't heard yet. If you're unaware, they feature tracks being played one after the other with Ed talking inbetween, musing about the history of the music and people he has encountered. It's like Radio 2 only with decent music. Plus there is this ancient page from the site that hasn't been updated in at least 18 months!

How "new" Frame Based Synthesis is, I couldn't say for sure, as elements are clearly present in FFT and possibly some forms of speech synthesis, not that I've done enough research to say so with any authority. Anyway, here's what's going on with the sound clips below.

With many synthesis systems, most of the parameters will determine the basic timbre, and then you might have a few elements to play with in order to change that over time, such as an envelope mapped to a Low Pass Filter in a classic Analogue design. My method takes an entire synth patch - which could involve an FM matrix, additive harmonic synthesis, granular sample playback or anything else - and saves it to a slot, or a "frame." Further timbres are created and saved, and then these patch changes are played back over time, creating movement in the sound. So essentially it's quite simple: instead of having to contend with 30 envelopes or something like that, you just design the timbre as it will be at a particular moment in time. For each step, varying degrees of lag can be applied to the parameters, creating smoother transitions if required.

The fun comes when having created a sequence with many steps. Pitch, rhythm and timbre have been rendered together in a kind of playlist, which I call a page. Pages can be recalled at will. They may be instantly loaded, or a smoother interpolation between the current page and a new page may be enacted. This "morphing" between pages can be specified as any number of steps, and given a curve argument, so that changes at the start and end of the transition period are more (or less) subtle that those in the middle.

There is clearly a lot more scope to this technique, not least that now an entire musical sequence along with its timbre is specified in full as simply a series of numbers, many different transformations can be applied for interesting results. Using this method to create melodies would be made easier with the use of a more intuitive interface, rather than the current grid of numbers. Also I'd like to work on making the code itself more efficient, as at the moment, faster transitions suffer from timing problems. As usual, I've made this stuff with SuperCollider.

I'll be DJ-ing in Dr. Pong again this coming saturday 14th March, going head to head or back to back or whatever with usual Pong resident Skkatter, and I recently said "yes" to Re:Fest in Ghent, Belgium, where I'll be playing a set on the 15th May. DMX Krew is playing the same festival but I'm not sure if we'll be playing on the same day.
It's also looking on the cards that I'll be making it out to Seattle in the middle of June, with the shadowy possibilities of appearances in Portland and Chicago.

Bazfoul Live in Tampere - video

Here is a musical clip from the ambient set, together with a sample of the visuals that were being projected at the same time. They were created with SuperCollider - various presets specifying the shapes and colours were being chosen, mixed up and morphed between in real time. The image compression involved in making and uploading the video has created loads of nasty artifacts not present in the original, just for your information! Although they are sort of cute in themselves. You have to see this projected on a large screen, it looked crisp.

It was my birthday in Tampere on Saturday, where I was playing the Mansedanse festival as mentioned previously. To celebrate, two of the crew Hanna and Wilhelmiina baked this crazy rave cake. As can be seen, it was as acid within as on the outside, and a couple of mouthfuls was all it took to experience an intense sugar rush. They also presented me with a pair of limited edition "cylob" labelled mittens, which will come in useful soon enough here in Berlin, where the winters are supposed to be very wintery (today it was 19 degrees and sunny, it didn't stop me trying out the wooly gloves though.)

Word to the Finnish crew, just to remind you that tomorrow I'll be doing this ambient set in Tampere. No, I won't be playing an endless sustained chord, or whale samples... in fact there will be very little use of effects, since it is a bit of a cliche to pile on the delay and reverb under such circumstances, and I wanted to resist this temptation. It will be something between a DJ and a live set: I'll be playing all of my own music, a nice selection of recreated old favourites and new stuff, balancing 8 channels of audio. Last night I programmed the mildly hypnotic visuals. I can't wait to see them projected, it's going to look mental. So come out tomorrow and catch something special... Also don't forget the party on Saturday 11th when I'll be playing the dancefloor set along with DMX Krew and Altern 8, enough said!

Here are the last two DJ sets I played, fresh from a few days ago. Finally I can get through a whole set without crashing! That's the one from Wednesday - the previous Sunday's effort contains a couple of unplanned ambient interludes.

As usual, I was using the Monome, in a similar way to this exciting video! (by the way, I've made it flash in time with the beat again.) All the skipping / instant remix and effects functions have been coming together nicely. I'm happier with these sets than I have been with previous efforts (being my own worst critic.) Anyway you can make your own mind up.

Here's the festival in Tampere, Finland that I'll be playing twice in October: an ambient set on the 9th and a dancefloor set on the 11th. I don't know how it will be on the 9th, but I perpetually dream of playing a gig where people sit down, shut up and listen instead of SHOUTING so loud that I can't hear what I'm doing despite it coming out of a 50k rig!

The line-up also includes the one man crew of DMX Krew, and if any more members left Altern-8 there would be an eerie silence instead of the inevitable breaks and rave stabs. (P.S. is there any genre of music that doesn't sound better in the presence of green lazers, dry ice and strobe lighting?)

I'm in two minds about this set... for one thing, there were some technical difficulties at the start. (A particularly slack 10 minutes has been edited out of the recording below. I haven't been too Stalinesque though, there are plenty of mistakes later on, don't worry about that.) These are mostly tunes I've played many times before, I don't know why I wasn't being very adventurous with the selection. On the other hand, the new skippy functions and liberal use of effects gives the set plenty of interesting moments. There is no crowd noise on the recording, but the response was really good! The best there's been in a while. Also, the visuals went really well, which was a bonus. OK so judge the recording for yourself.

This time, the visuals worked like a charm, along with a few additions. The real-time stats have been improved, and the visual representation of DJ-ing activity now includes when the effects are patched in. See it for yourself in a couple of weeks in Berlin!
Music-wise this was a mostly solid selection with the odd wacky moment... I had a mishap halfway through when the Monome became unplugged, which meant I had to then restart my program, playing a track off iTunes in the meantime. That didn't seem to ruin things too much though.

So this is how it was in Madrid, with my own visuals patch running on a second laptop. The pretty patterns are reflecting the status of buttons on the Monome, the text scrolling at the top is showing track titles, below that is the beat count (ie the number of beats so far) and the text at the bottom is showing things like the BPM, Process.elapsedTime (if you are an SC person you will know what that means) and various rave instructions ("time to make the floor burn" etc.)

Shame it stopped working after about half an hour! It just goes to show, you should always test a system as it will be used. I shan't bore you with the details, but next time it will stay the course, if there is ever a next time... (P.S. I'm perpetually available for discotheque duty.)

Demonstrating the creation and storing of chords, editing individual notes for velocity, tuning and sound variation, editing a separate group of these parameters for the overall chord, and then sequencing these chords. Sorry the harmonies I came up with aren't very nice to listen to, I was concentrating on showing the features and keeping everything in frame.
